Site of “1900 Storm” Still the biggest natural disaster in US history. The island is now protected by the sea wall (Seawall Blvd) which was constructed immediately after 1900 storm to prevent hurricanes from causing such horrific damage, it took 8 years to complete. Before this storm Galveston was the second richest city in the United States behind only Newport Rhode Island.
